Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a family lawyer at heart
June 29, 2006
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg received the "Friend of the Family" award this month from the Family Law Section of the American Bar Association. She was initially surprised because she never practiced family law, and the Supreme Court rarely hears matters we would recognize as domestic relations cases.
In accepting the award, Justice Ginsberg reflected that actually, most of her "grand constitutional " appellate cases prior to becoming a member of the Supreme Court were in essence family law matters. She praised the Family Law Section for providing counsel "in the area that most closely touches the people law exists to serve."
