1600s polymath Blaise Pascal wrote, “There are truths on this side of the Pyrenees that are falsehoods on the other.” Cultural competence is attitudes, practices, and policies that help people and institutions work well with others across cultures. Cultural sensitivity, transcultural skills, diversity competence, and multicultural expertise are closely interrelated topics. What defines a culture? What barriers might block successful communication between individuals or agencies of differing cultures?
